Hosts in final of hockey tourney

Ranchi, Feb. 13: Defending champions and hosts Jharkhand will meet Karnataka tomorrow in the final of the 8th All India BSNL hockey tournament being played at the astroturf hockey stadium.

Incidentally this will be the eighth time that these two teams will clash in the finals for the BSNL title. So far Jharkhand has won the title twice, in 2007-08 and 2008-09, and will be looking to making it three in a row. Karnataka has won it five times.

Maintaining its devastating form, Jharkhand slammed 10 goals against NTR Delhi in the first semi-final, to win the match by 10-1.

Jharkhand captain Lalit Kumar Panna set the ball rolling literally in the very first minute through a field goal. Three more, all field goals, followed, in the 7th, 8th and 14th minutes, scored by Manoj Pradhan, Sunil Tirkey and Cyprian Kullu. For NTR Delhi, captain Premjit Kujur converted a penalty corner in the 29th minute to reduce the margin to 4-1 at half time.

Thereafter it was Jharkhand all the way. In the 31st minute Manoj Pradhan scored again to make the score 5-1. Pradhan scored his third goal in the 50th minute. In between, Thomas Nag and Cyprian Kullu scored a goal each. E.W. Dungdung and Marcel Tirkey joined the goal spree wherein hosts scored 10 goals and conceded one, that too through a penalty corner.

The second semi-final between Karnataka and Orissa too turned out to be a one-sided affair with the former winning the match 6-0. The highlight of the match was the goal scoring ability of Karnataka’s Md Nazim A. Bepari, scored three goals in a row, a perfect hat-trick, today, to take his personal tally to 10 goals up to the semi-final stage.

For Karnataka, George Dominic opened the account in the first minute. O.E. Thimmaiah scored the second goal in the seventh minute .
