One held for Vedic accused murder

Naser Gazi, 28, was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the murder of Kelobabu, alias Abdul Hai , a key accused in the Vedic Village case. Police said Naser, who has a criminal background, had been embroiled in a turf war with Kelobabu in Haroa, North 24-Parganas. An officer said Naser had confessed that he, along with four others, had conspired to kill Kelobabu.

Lashkar man quizzed

Alleged Lashkar-e-Toiba operative Amzad Khoja, who was brought to the city on Monday in connection with cases relating to fake currency, was quizzed on Tuesday by Calcutta police. An officer said the Pakistani’s interrogation revealed that he had sent Mohammad Yakub, a Bangladeshi, to Calcutta with fake notes worth Rs 30 lakh last year.

Held for murder

The woman whose body was found in a sack in Bangur Avenue on Sunday has been identified as Ganga Rajbanshi, 23. Lake Town police on Tuesday detained two persons in connection with the murder. Ganga, a resident of Hatiara off Baguiati, used to work as a domestic help in several apartments in C Block of Bangur Avenue. A probe revealed that she might have been strangled, an officer said.

Fires

Two fires broke out in the city on Tuesday. Around 9am, an office on the fifth floor of LIC Bhavan in central Calcutta caught fire. Some computers and documents were damaged before three fire engines doused the flames. Firemen said the fire probably resulted from a short circuit. At 11am, dry grass piled outside the Milon Mela complex, where Calcutta Book Fair was held, caught fire. Two fire engines doused the flames. No one was injured in either mishap.

School mishap

A school bus of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan ferrying two students hit a wall in DH Block of Salt Lake at 8.15am on Tuesday. The bus lost control and hit a cyclist before ramming into a tree and the wall. The helper of the bus and the cyclist were admitted to hospital. The kids were unhurt.

Found hanging

Khushbu Sharma, 23, was found hanging at her Karl Marx Sarani home in the West Port police station area on Tuesday. Police said no suicide note was found.

Rail reservation

Railway minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate a computerised railway reservation centre at Gariahat at 3pm on Wednesday.

Truck blaze

A truck carrying baskets of fruits caught fire on Nivedita Setu at 2.30pm on Tuesday. Four tenders took two hours to douse the flames, which stalled traffic on the bridge.
