Foresters raid saw mill
Siliguri, Feb. 2: Foresters seized a sawing machine, a trolley, blades and timber from an illegal saw mill at Batyasi in Khoribari today.
The raid was conducted by foresters from the Kurseong division led by two additional divisional forest officers, Dawa Sangmu Sherpa and N.C Roy. They were accompanied by officials of Panighata, Tukriajhar, Bagdogra, Sevoke, Bamanpokhri and Bagora ranges and forces from 10 State Armed Police and the Khoribari police station. The mill, that is owned by Ashok Agarwal, has been dismantled. Nobody has been arrested yet.
Nature camp
Siliguri: The Himalayan Nature and Adventure Foundation will organise its 8th annual Nature Study Camp for visually challenged children at Panchawati Resort in Lataguri, 70km from here, from February 6 to 9. Animesh Bose, the programme coordinator of the foundation, said here on Tuesday the camp will be organised in association with the Society for the Visually Handicapped in Calcutta and the Lataguri Social Welfare Organisation. He said about 40 children, between five and 14 years, will participate in the camp.
Peace plea
Islampur: Members of the Trinamul Congress submitted a memorandum to the state home secretary through the SDO of Islampur on Tuesday, demanding restoration of law and order in the subdivision. Tabibur Rahman, a Trinamul leader, said over the past week, several political clashes have occurred in the subdivision and two persons have been killed.
Kickboxing
Siliguri: Sumit Kumar, Krishnendu Barman and Nabadwip Roy of the Kickboxing Association of Jalpaiguri won silver and bronze medals in the full contact (men) events of the 12th State Kickboxing Championship. The championship was held at Chirantani Park in Calcutta on January 30 and 31.
