Four youths snatched at gunpoint a briefcase containing Rs 10 lakh from a building materials supplier travelling by a bus at Bhojerhat, under Calcutta Leather Complex police station, on Monday. Police said Arindam Chanda was on the way to Rajbajar. The youths boarded the bus and took away the briefcase.
Fake currency: Raju Chowdhury, the 27-year-old man arrested with fake currency at Fancy Market on Sunday, has links with a Bangladeshi racket, police said. Three persons, allegedly Bangladeshis, were picked up on Monday from Garden Reach on the basis of information provided by Chowdhury. He was produced in an Alipore court on Monday and remanded in police custody for seven days.
Trader robbed: Cash and jewellery worth more than Rs 2 lakh were stolen from the house of a hardware trader in Birati on Monday. Police said Subir Roy, who was to get married on Monday, was in his house when the theft took place.
Indira Bhavan: State urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya on Monday ordered Bidhannagar Municipality and police to remove the iron barricades in front of Indira Bhavan within two days. The barricades had been put up for late chief minister Jyoti Basu’s security. Last week, the Trinamul Congress had asked the municipal chairman to remove the barriers as they had caused “a number of fatal accidents”.
Woman killed: A 33-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her unemployed husband in their Belgachhia home on Sunday night. Relatives said Bulbul Das had fought with her husband Keshto in the afternoon. Keshto is absconding. The couple have a 16-year-old son.
Body found: The body of an unidentified woman was found beside Nilgunge Road at Barabaria on Monday morning. Police said the woman’s hands were tied and the body bore several injuries.
Car burnt: A car caught fire in Salt Lake on Monday morning after the woman driving it, BJ block resident Anuradha Roy, rammed into a transformer near BK school.
