Henin keeps up the good work
Sydney: Belgian Justine Henin continued her successful return to professional tennis with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kazakhstan’s Sesil Karatantcheva at the Brisbane International on Wednesday.
The former world No.1 cruised to victory in the night session to advance to the quarter finals against Hungary’s Melinda Czink. Andy Roddick scored a 7-6, 6-3 second round win over Australian Carsten Ball in the men’s draw.
James Blake fought off a strong challenge from Frenchman Marc Gicquel to win 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
India win
Bursa: GM S. Arun Prasad secured the crucial point as India edged past Greece to emerge joint leader after the opening round of the World Team Chess Championship. Arun beat Stelios Halkias while his teammates settled for draws as India scripted a 2.5-1.5 win.
NRAI to appeal
New Delhi: The National Rifles Association of India Wednesday said it will appeal the Rs 8 crore penalty slapped by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence over allegations that the national body made profits by supplying equipment to its state units.
Barca lose
Madrid: Diego Capel and Alvaro Negredo scored at the Nou Camp to give Sevilla a 2-1 win over holders Barcelona in the first leg of their King’s Cup last-16 tie on Tuesday.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic had cancelled out Capel’s 59th-minute strike but Negredo scored from the spot after Barca conceded a penalty.
