1 dead, 2 injured in accidents
One person was killed and two were injured in two accidents in the city on Monday. Arati Pal, a resident of Sonarpur, died after an unidentified vehicle dashed her on Jawaharlal Nehru Road around 11.35am on Monday. She was taken to SSKM Hospital, where she died.
round 12.30pm, Sidhartha Chowdhury, 9, and Asha Das, 55, were injured after a private vehicle hit them on Karaya Road. They were taken to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital and discharged after treatment. After hitting the duo, driver tried to flee down Lower Range Road and hit a man riding a scooter. The driver has been arrested.
Departure delay
The 2303 Poorva Express will leave Howrah at 1.25pm on Tuesday instead of 8.05am as the Down train was running late because of dense fog in north India.
Circus elephant
A circus elephant being treated at the Netaji Sangha ground in Howrah died on Monday. The 50-year-old animal had fallen ill in November. Forest department doctors said the elephant died of an infected wound on its leg.
Varsity project
Scholar Mani Bhowmick, whose educational foundation is working with the ministry of overseas Indian affairs to set up a university in Calcutta in collaboration with the University of California, met chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee at Writers’ Buildings on Monday and submitted a status report.
Bullets in bag
A bag with three cartridges of .38 bore was found on a bicycle in front of the CISF office at the airport. A probe revealed the cycle belonged to an airport employee, Babloo Valmiki. But he claimed the bag was not his. There was no name on the bag. No one has been arrested.
Power supply
Power supply may be affected in the Kali Mazumdar Road, Bhairab Dutta Road, Sitanath Bose Road, Benaras Road, Gopal Ram Pathak Road, Kumarpara and Bagdipara areas between 9am and 2pm on Tuesday.
