We do not put a row of Christmas cards on a string in our living rooms anymore. No one has the time, or so they say, to go over to the post office and mail the cards. Since 1982, when the word first appeared in our venerable lexicon as a noun, e-mail has replaced an age-old tradition of proudly displaying Christmas cards. Britain’s Royal Mail still issues special postage stamps for Christmas but their numbers have dwindled drastically in recent years. I miss my cards, there’s something magical about them.
