23 hurt in clash at jute mill
Cooch Behar, Dec. 24: Twenty jute mill workers and three policemen were injured in a clash between Intuc and Citu members today at the Chakchaka industrial estate here.
Cooch Behar police chief Kalyan Banerjee said a team of 10 policemen from Kotwali went to the spot. “The police were attacked with stones and the jeep damaged. Three constables were injured and we have arrested six persons.” Later, personnel of the Rapid Action Force and armed police were deployed.
The police said the Intuc had called a strike at the Kamakshi Jute Mill against a wage agreement between the owners of the mill and the Citu led workers’ union. When members of the Citu turned up for work at 6.30am, they were allegedly blocked by the Intuc members and the clash began. The mill was set up at the industrial estate in 2001.
Alipurduar: One person was beaten up and handed over to police after he snatched Rs 1.5 lakh from Manoj Choudhury, a finance agent, on Wednesday near Jaigaon. Goutam Tamang was produced in the court of additional chief judicial magistrate here and was remanded in police custody for three days.
Siliguri: Supporters of the SFI blocked NH31 near Shivmandir for an hour on Thursday, demanding the arrest of some students of North Bengal University’s law department who had allegedly beaten up their supporters on Wednesday. The protesters also alleged that iron rods were stored in the union room, which could be used against them. The blockade was from 2.30pm.
