Lawyer in jail for sleaze
Siliguri, Dec. 10: A lawyer of Calcutta High Court has been lodged in Jalpaiguri Central Jail for the past five days after he was booked under the immoral trafficking act. He was caught in a compromising situation with a girl in a Salugara hotel on Friday night.
Acting on a tip-off, Bhaktinagar police raided the hotel and found Partha Sarathi Deb Burman with the girl in a room. The police also caught Biswajit Sarkar, a resident of Mathabhanga, with another girl in a room.
The four were booked under the immoral trafficking act and were denied bail by the chief judicial magistrate of Jalpaiguri, Sajan Sengupta, after they were produced before him the next day.
Rights Day
Siliguri: The law department of North Bengal University observed Human Rights Day on Thursday. Students took out a procession in town and organised a seminar at the department. Siliguri mayor Gangotri Datta was present at the seminar.
Fee hike meet
Siliguri: Two deputy directors of the state school education department will attend a meeting on December 16 here on the fee hike in eight English medium schools. “Amiya Sanyal and Manoranjan Roy have been deputed to look into the hike of fees in schools in Siliguri and Jalpaiguri. They will arrive here to attend a meeting on December 16,” said Asit Chakraborty, the district inspector (DI) of schools, secondary education.
U-16 cricket
Siliguri: Jharkhand bagged three points against Bengal in the Vijay Merchant Trophy Under-16 Cricket Championship, which ended in a draw at Kanchenjungha Stadium on Thursday. Jharkhand got the points on the basis of their first innings lead over the hosts. Earlier, Jharkhand had made 235 in the first innings. In reply, Bengal finished their innings at 189. The host team will face Tripura here on December 14 in the next round of the league match.
