Man forced off bus dies on road

A middle-aged man, forced off a minibus on Bankim Setu in Howrah on Thursday afternoon, was later declared dead at Howrah District Hospital. Police said a food vendor saw the man, who could not be identified, being dumped by a conductor of the bus and then lying on the pavement. The body of an unidentified man in his 30s was found floating in Santragachi Jheel at Baksara in Howrah on Thursday morning. Both bodies were sent for post-mortem.

Woman drugged

A 22-year-old woman was found lying unconscious in a Maidan park on Wednesday evening. Police spotted the woman after the park’s gates were closed for the day and took her to SSKM Hospital, where doctors she had consumed spiked drink or food. After regaining consciousness, the woman, a resident of Behala, said she had gone to the park with her boyfriend, who had offered her a soft drink. She has no memory of what happened after that. The boyfriend is absconding. A complaint of drugging and attempted kidnap has been registered.

Girl rescued

A 16-year-old girl, a resident of Tangra, has been rescued from Rampur in Bihar and two youths arrested on the charge of “selling her off”. Police said the girl eloped with her boyfriend Totan Das 10 days ago. Totan and another youth identified as Bapi Debnath then sold the girl to a racket in Bihar which sends dancers to private parties. The duo were produced in court on Thursday and remanded in police custody till December 23.

Robbed

Three unidentified men on a motorcycle robbed a trader of Rs 25,000 and several prepaid cellphone cards near Dum Dum Metro station on Thursday afternoon. Somnath Saha, 25, who sells prepaid mobile cards, was walking towards the station when the youths, one of them pointing a revolver at the trader, snatched his bag containing the money and the cards.

Fliers stranded

Passengers of an Etihad Airline flight were stranded on Thursday after it was diverted to Calcutta and the pilot’s flight duty time limitation was over. The flight, carrying 193 passengers and 13 crew members, was scheduled to fly from Abu Dhabi to Dhaka but was diverted to Calcutta because of bad weather in the Bangladesh capital. The flight landed in Calcutta around 4.30am. Five hours later, when the weather improved in Dhaka, the pilot was no longer eligible to fly. The passengers were brought to the international terminal, where, they alleged, there was no food or water. Air India officials, on behalf of Etihad, applied for a day’s visa for the passengers, which was granted. The passengers were put up in city hotels at night.

College clash

A clash broke out between supporters of the SFI and the Trinamul Chhatra Parishad at Acharya Prafulla Chandra College in New Barrackpore on Thursday afternoon. Police said a dispute over filing nomination for the students’ union election triggered the clash. Police lathicharged the warring students to control the situation. A Rapid Action Force team, too, was called in. SFI supporters later blocked the railway tracks at Bisharpara-Kodalia railway for an hour, disrupting trains on the Dum Dum-Barasat route.

Salt Lake theft

Ornaments and Rs 2.29 lakh were allegedly stolen from a house in Salt Lake’s BE block on Thursday afternoon. The owner complained that he returned to the house after attending a invitation to find the door to the roof open and cash and valuables missing from the almirah.

Gambling racket

Md Imran, 30, a resident of Pilkhana Third Lane in Howrah, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly running a gambling racket in the area.

Passport fraud

Harjeet Singh, 30, a resident of Punjab, was arrested at the airport on Thursday for carrying a forged passport. He flew in from Malaysia, where he had been working for eight months.
