A 55-year-old unidentified woman was run over by a tram on Asutosh Chowdhury Avenue, near Calcutta Cricket & Football Club, on Tuesday evening.

“Pedestrians alerted a traffic sergeant after seeing her body lying on the tram tracks around 6pm. She was taken to SSKM Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead,” said an investigating officer of Ballygunge police station.

The woman suffered head and leg injuries. “It seems she was crossing the road and did not notice the approaching tram. The vehicle hit her from behind,” added the officer.

“We are taking the help of residents to identify the victim. We are sure that she lived in the area,” said another officer.

The body was sent for post-mortem.
