Learner driver runs over two
A youth learning to drive mowed down a man and a woman on JN Tiwari Road in Dum Dum on Monday. Cops said the mishap occurred when Sailendra Kumar was teaching Raju Roy to drive on the congested stretch. Raju had accidentally pressed the accelerator of the Ambassador, which hit 74-year-old pedestrian Nirapada Nath and 45-year-old Sunayana Shaw before coming to a halt after hitting a lamp post. Kumar and Roy were arrested. The car was impounded.
Branch falls on man
A 54-year-old man died after a branch of a sirish tree fell on him in Kailash Bose Street, under Amherst Street police station, on Monday. Sanjay Rakshit, a resident of Habra, was taken to NRS hospital, where he was declared dead.
Couple murder
Bapi Raut, who was arrested on Sunday in connection with the murder of a couple at Sree Colony in Jadavpur, was produced in the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court in Alipore on Monday and remanded in police custody for 12 days. Police said Raut had claimed during interrogation that the couple were not paying him Rs 6,000 that they allegedly owed him.
Theft arrest
Binod Das, 24, was arrested on Monday in connection with a theft in an SP Mukherjee Road apartment on November 20. Two wristwatches and a digital camera were recovered from Das’s Debendra Ghosh Road residence. Police said Das had a criminal record.
