safety concerns

q:I’m looking for an MPV priced around Rs 10 lakh. My concern is about safety features and I feel that safety is compromised in the Mahindra Xylo E8, which lacks airbags. Is it worth waiting for the Tata Indicruz, due in early 2010? Will it come with ABS and airbags?

Vimal Selvaraj

a:Mahindra will introduce airbags and ABS in the Xylo, which should take care of your safety concerns. However, the Indicruz, built on a new platform and with lots of new technology for a Tata vehicle, is quite promising and certainly worth waiting for.

alto delight

q:I plan to buy a Maruti Alto soon. When will it get the K-series engine? Is it worth waiting for or should I buy an Alto now?

Abhas Sharma

a:There are no plans to launch the Alto with the K-series engine. The current engine (F8D) will be upgraded to meet Bharat Stage IV emission norms before April 2010.

diesel on the go

q:I want to buy a diesel-engined C-size saloon. Will Toyota include a 1.4-litre diesel engine in the Corolla Altis and will the Maruti SX4 offer a 1.6 or 1.9-litre diesel anytime soon? Will there be a diesel offering with the Suzuki Grand Vitara? Does Hyundai plan to offer the i30 with a big boot? And will the VW Polo saloon be equivalent to the new Honda City in size and rear legroom?

K P Singaravelu

a:Toyota plans to launch the diesel Corolla by mid-2010. Suzuki is not enthusiastic about ‘dieselisation’ of its cars because it has to rely on Fiat for engines. Hyundai’s i30 is unlikely to come to India as large hatchbacks have limited demand. And the VW Polo saloon will have a longer wheelbase than the hatchback to give it more space which will rival the Honda City.
