College student run over by train
A second-year college student jogging along the tracks near Baruipur railway station early on Friday was run over by a Sealdah-bound train he probably could not see through the fog. A friend who was running with Subrata Mondal jumped off the tracks on time and was unhurt, said a GRP officer. Two other friends of Subrata, a resident of Baruipur, were on the platform. The young man was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Teen dead in friend home
The body of a 13-year-old boy, who went missing on Wednesday, was found in the house of his friend Kartik Das, 19, on Friday morning. Police said Amit Majhi, who worked in a timber mill, had left his Nawpara home on Wednesday evening. A local resident saw Kartik using Amit’s cellphone on Friday morning and informed Amit’s family. The boy’s body was found in a sack in Kartik’s house. Kartik, who works in a garment shop, is absconding.
Mishap deaths
Tapas Roy, 21 and Raju Baulia, 35, were killed on Friday morning when the car they were travelling in was hit by a truck near Kanchrapara on Kalyani Expressway. Police said the two were heading for Bedi Bhavan near Kalyani when the truck hit their car head-on. Truck driver Bijoy Das was arrested.
Fall from roof
A 28-year-old woman was critically injured after she fell from the roof of a five-storey building where she lived with her family. Police said Niraj Kedia, a resident of 265 GT Road, fell while she was hanging clothes on the roof. She first fell on a cable and then hit the ground. Kedia was admitted to TL Jaiswal Hospital with multiple fractures.
Pension plea
Members of the West Bengal Teachers Pension Revolutionary Samiti met state finance minister Asim Dasgupta at Writers’ Buildings on Friday and demanded the release of pensions of around 1,500 teachers who had retired over a decade back. Anil Ghosh, the samiti secretary, said Dasgupta has assured them that he would try to ensure that the money was disbursed by the end of the month.
Loot recovered
Jewellery stolen from a house in Serpentine Lane on November 20 was recovered on Friday after police raided the house of the family help, Lakshmi Das, in Habra. Police said Lakshmi, who is absconding, had stolen the valuables from Manisha Dalui’s house.
Techie custody
Sujit Chakraborty, the software engineer who had allegedly slashed employees of a drugstore in Salt Lake’s GD Market on Thursday in a drunken state, was produced in court on Friday and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
Protesters held
Around 60 SUCI activists were arrested on Friday in front of Writers’ Buildings while they were protesting against rising prices and a hike in electricity charges. The protesters arrived around 1.30pm, shortly after chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee left for lunch, police said.
Cervical cancer
Nobel winner Harald zur Hausen met chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and state health minister Surjya Kanta Mishra at Writers’ Buildings on Friday and discussed the causes and treatment of cervical cancer.
