NATION BRIEFS

Headley link

Mumbai, Dec. 4 (PTI): The US has deported an Indian who used the services of the Mumbai-based immigration office of terror suspects David Headley and Tahawwur Rana after his documents were allegedly found to be false.

However, the person, whose name has been withheld, was let off by Delhi officials who concluded after investigation that he did not have any link either with Headley and Rana or any terrorist organisation. The person said he had paid huge sums of money to Headley’s office to emigrate to the US from Canada. He has been now allowed to travel to Gujarat, his native place.

Thampu rap

New Delhi (PTI): Delhi High Court on Thursday chided Valson Thampu, the principal of St. Stephens College, for “misusing his power” by sacking a member of the institution’s governing body. The court said Thampu had the power to nominate a person to the governing body but could not decide the tenure of a member. Election commissioner S.Y. Quraishi had been nominated in place of Ajay P. Singha.

Cheque case

New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court has held that a convict or an accused in a cheque-bounce case can be let off if the complainant agrees to a compromise. The court said the offence could be made compoundable even after a person was convicted.

ASI cheated

New Delhi (PTI): The CBI has filed a chargesheet against the proprietor of a private firm who allegedly submitted forged tenders on behalf of two firms and supplied sub-standard material to the Archaeological Survey of India. The ASI had invited tenders for the installation of access control systems at five protected monuments and sites.
