One dead in mishap
One person died and two were injured in accidents in the city on Monday and on Tuesday. Asim Santra, 42, was hit by a lorry belonging to the civic body while cycling down Vivekananda Road on Tuesday morning. He was taken to RG Kar hospital, where he was declared dead. The driver fled with the vehicle. n Monday night, a 23-year-old girl and her companion were injured when their car dashed against a roadside railing on JL Nehru Road. They were released from a nursing home after first-aid. The car has been impounded.
Burgled
Cash and jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh were allegedly looted from the Fern Road residence of Uttam Biswas. Biswas found the house ransacked after he returned with his family on Tuesday evening. Their help, from Mathurapur in South 24-Parganas, was missing. Police suspect the theft was committed on Monday.
Bank fraud
Bapi Das and Shiv Shankar Dubey, who were wanted for duping the BB Ganguly Street branch of SBI of Rs 2 crore in 2005-06, were arrested on Tuesday. The duo had allegedly got a loan from the bank posing as promoters.
Airport union
A Trinamul Congress-backed employees’ union was formed at Calcutta airport on Tuesday. Pradip Sikdar was chosen the secretary of the Airport Authorities Staff and Workers’ Union, affiliated to the Inttuc.
CU protest
Calcutta University examinees who had failed to clear BA and BSc Part II papers continued their agitation for the second consecutive day on Tuesday. The students alleged gross anomalies in their results and demanded supplementary examinations so that they could clear their backlog and take the Part III tests next year.
