Md Rashid, 43, was sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday for sexually abusing two girls in 2008 in an NGO-run shelter in Collin Street. Rashid was arrested following a complaint by the NGO.

Mishaps: Three persons, including a traffic cop, were injured in mishaps late on Sunday and Monday. Bapi Chakraborty, 22, a motorcyclist and Jayanto Kuila, 30, an auto driver, were injured when their vehicles collided in front of a club on Beleghata Main Road late on Sunday. Both were taken to NRS Medical College and Hospital.

Ram Sagar Singh, 45, an assistant sub-inspector of South traffic guard, was injured after a taxi knocked him down on Red Road. He was taken to SSKM Hospital and then shifted to CMRI Hospital.

Protest: Around 50 students who had failed to clear all papers in the BA/BSc Part II exams or their Part I backlog held a demonstration at Calcutta University on Monday.

The students demanded that they be allowed to sit for the papers in which they failed along with writing the Part III tests next year. Vice chancellor Suranjan Das said the university’s undergraduate council would take up the issue soon.
