3 killed, 12 hurt in mishap
Malda, Nov. 26: Three persons were killed and 12 others were injured when a trekker they were travelling in fell into a roadside ditch on the Gajole-Bamongola state highway around 12 noon today.
The deceased persons have been identified as Satya Sarkar, 65, Lakshmi Murdi, 55, and Khatan Murmu, 35. The driver fled after the accident but his vehicle has been seized, police said. The trekker turned turtle while trying to save a cyclist. Three of the injured have been admitted to the Malda district hospital while others were taken to the Gajole hospital.
Local people set up a blockade on the highway to protest frequent accidents in the area. Gajole police dispersed the protesters.
Kids’ fest
Siliguri: Sishu Kishor Sangeet, Nritya O Abriti Utsav, a two-day cultural fest for children, began at Dinabandhu Mancha here on Thursday. The festival is organised jointly by the Sishu Kishor Academy and the state information and cultural department.
Body found
Islampur: The body of a newborn was recovered from the Islampur High School grounds on Thursday. The police said the body of the male child was wrapped in plastic. Local people noticed it and informed the police.
Health camp
Islampur: BSF personnel posted at Kishanganj organised a free health check-up camp at Bilanpur in Chopra, near the Indo-Bangladesh border, on Thursday. More than 200 villagers were treated at the camp and given free medicines.
Tea meeting
Jalpaiguri: Representatives of the operating and management committee of the closed Ramjhora Tea Estate met the additional district magistrate of Jalpaiguri on Thursday. Ganpath Oraon, the committee’s convener, said they were deprived of several benefits and wanted the government to open the garden at the earliest.
