Guwahati, Nov. 24: Unseeded Arjun Kadhe today stunned all at the Chachal Tennis Complex here when he upset eighth seed Sai Teja Paladugu in the boys’ singles match of the ongoing ITF Junior World Ranking Tennis Tournament.
Kadhe outplayed Paladugu in straight sets of 6-4, 6-1 to book a pre-quarterfinal berth in the third edition of the tournament held here. The other seeds, however, sailed smoothly in the boys’ courts today.
The girls’ singles courts, too, witnessed an unlikely upset as second seed Divija Mandava crashed out to unseeded Bhuvana Kalva, retiring with an injury.
Kulva won the first set 6-3 but the next set went to Mandava. The third set was going on an even keel when Mandava injured herself in the knee after over stretching herself and conceded the match.
Mandava was leading the set 2-3, but Kulva was declared the winner.
The second seed tandem of Divija Mandava and Spurti Shivalingaiah also had to concede a walkover to Rimpledeep Kaur Batth and Meghna Sehrawat in the girls’ doubles first round because of Mandava’s injury.
After home lad Alok Kumar Tripathi’s early exit yesterday, home players Manab Kumar Chakma and Madhurjya Dutta also bowed out of the singles courts today.
Chakma lost to R. Maheshwari 2-6, 0-6, while third seed Briton Daniel Cochrane blanked out Dutta 6-0, 6-0 in the first round matches today.
Chakma and Tripathi’s tandem also crashed out of the boys’ doubles courts, losing to Max England of Great Britain and Sebastian King of Canada 4-6, 3-6.
Dutta also went down in tandem with Kushal Mehta in the boys’ doubles first round to the British pair of Elston Daniel and Toby Martin in straight sets of 0-6, 4-6.
In the girls’ singles courts, Thai girl N. Chaiprukmalakan blanked out Assam’s Sumaiyah Begum 6-0, 6-0 and in the girls’ doubles, Namita Bal and Smriti Joon defeated the duo of Kanishka Arora and Pamir Gogoi in straight sets of 6-0, 6-1.
