Assembly bypolls

New Delhi, Nov. 20 (PTI): Byelections to four Assembly seats spread across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Manipur will be held on December 19.

The polls will take place in Pulivendula in Andhra, which used to be Y.S. Rajashekara Reddy’s constituency, Thiruchendur and Vandawasi in Tamil Nadu and Yaiskul in Manipur.

Cong death

Belgaum (PTI): Former Union minister and veteran Congressman B. Shankaranand, 85, died on Friday after prolonged illness. He had headed the parliamentary panel to probe the allegations of kickbacks in the Bofors scam. Shankaranand is survived by two sons and six daughters.

Nanak varsity

Lahore (PTI): The Pakistan government will begin work on setting up a university named after Guru Nanak at his birthplace in Nankana Sahib in the Punjab province. Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani will lay the foundation stone in January. The varsity will be established at a cost of Rs 500 crore.

Snow tragedy

Shimla: Eight people were killed and six injured in a snowstorm in Manali’s Rohtang area on Friday. Seventy-three people were caught in the snowstorm while returning from Manali’s Lahau and Spiti districts. Seven of the eight dead were labourers from Jharkhand.

AI offer

Mumbai (PTI): Air India has offered senior citizens (65 years and above) a 20 per cent discount for travel in first and executive classes on international flights. The discount offer, however, is available only on tickets purchased from the airline’s reservation offices in India.

Doc teased

Aligarh (PTI): Two youths have been arrested from a hotel near Aligarh railway station for allegedly harassing an Iranian lady doctor. The duo had made “obscene gestures” at the woman, who had come from Delhi on a visit to Aligarh Muslim University.
