Clash at college
A clash broke out between SFI and Trinamul Chhatra Parishad supporters at Heramba Chandra College on Thursday. A section of students smashed doors and broke furniture and a notice board in the union room. Members of both groups were injured in the clash. The principal lodged a complaint with police.
Protest
Students and residents demonstrated outside the office of a private hotel management institute in Salt Lake’s CD block on Thursday. Manik Adhikari, a former student of the insitute, had lodged a police complaint last week claiming that the authorities were demanding Rs 30,000 to return his original certificates. Students have also complained about poor facilities at the institute. Under pressure, the institute authorities returned Adhikari’s certificates.
Woman dead
The burnt body of a 35-year-old woman was found in her home in Bankra Thanapara in Howrah on Thursday morning. Mehrunissa Bibi lived with her son and two daughters. Her husband Sheikh Taibul Rehman works outside the state. Mehrunissa’s brothers-in-law Abdul Rehman and Kajrul Rehman were held for allegedly torturing her.
Boy drowns
The body of a four-year-old boy was found floating in a pond near Cossipore Road on Thursday morning. Anis Yadav was missing since Wednesday. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
Turtles seized
Forest department officials and police seized 1,985 Gangetic turtles at Barasat on Thursday. Police said the turtles, packed in 20 bags, were being transported on a truck to Bongaon. The driver and his help were arrested and remanded in police custody after being produced in Barasat court. Forest officials said the turtles would be released in the Hooghly.
Robbery
Thieves stole more than Rs 50,000 from Santoshpur Sikshayatan at Ajaynagar, on the southern fringes, late on Wednesday. Police said the locker of the almirah in which the money had been kept was broken.
Workers held
Subrata Saha, 30, and Mithun Das, 25, were arrested after a clash between workers outside Loomtex Jute Mill in Titagarh on Thursday afternoon.
Man stabbed
A youth named Suman Sarkar was arrested for allegedly stabbing his friend after the latter tried to snatch away a packet of flattened rice from him near Santragachhi rail bridge around 7.30pm on Thursday. Gautam Dutta was admitted to Howrah District Hospital in a critical condition, said police.
