Cops kill activist

Kasaragod, Nov. 15 (PTI): One person was killed in police firing and at least 30 cops were injured in a clash with Indian Union Muslim League supporters.

The trouble began when the police tried to stop an unscheduled IUML rally. Another IUML supporter was stabbed to death by unknown persons at nearby Karanthakkad on his way back from the rally.

Indians freed

Mogadishu (Reuters): Somali pirates have freed nine Indian and Bangladeshi sailors after businessmen and clan elders in Mogadishu’s semi-autonomous northern Puntland negotiated their release. The sailors were dropped off late on Saturday in Puntland’s capital Garowe.

Dalai trip

Itanagar (PTI): The Dalai Lama wound up his week-long visit to Arunachal Pradesh and left for New Delhi on Sunday morning. The Tibetan spiritual leader left by helicopter for Guwahati from where he was to fly to Delhi, officials said.

Barc reactor

Mumbai (PTI): The research reactor at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai will be shut down completely by December 2010 according to the separation plan under the Indo-US civil nuclear deal. The 40 megawatt reactor was refurbished in 2005 for carrying out research and production of medical radioisotopes.

Gold gang

Tirunelveli (PTI): An 11-member gang, mostly made up by women, was arrested in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli for allegedly selling gold-coated coins in exchange for gold jewellery. The gang had claimed these were real gold coins.

Leopard shot

Dehra Dun (PTI): A maneater leopard has been shot dead in a village near Dehra Dun, the second such instance in a week.
