India finish third with 12 medals

Guangzhou: Long distance runner Kavita Raut and women’s 4x400m relay team won a silver each while men’s 4x400m relay quartet bagged a bronze on the final day as India ended the Asian Athletics Championships at third position Saturday. India in total have 12 medals (one gold, 4 silver, 7 bronze) while China (18 gold, 19 silver, 10 bronze) and Japan (12 gold, 5 silver, 5 bronze) finished first and second respectively.

Rohan in final

New Delhi: Rohan Bopanna along with his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi scored an easy 6-3, 6-4 win over unseeded Lovro Zovko of Croatia and Yves Allegro of Switzerland in the semi-finals to reach the final of the of the Aachen event in Germany.

Poor show

New Delhi: Somdev Dev Varman-Purav Raja and Harsh Mankad and his Filipino partner Treat Conard Huey lost their respective doubles semi-finals of the ATP Challenger event in Knoxville in US. Somdev and Purav went down 2-6, 3-6 against South African pair of Raven Klaasen and Izak Van der Merwe while Harsh and his Philippines’ partner lost 3-6, 6-7 (3) to Germany’s Martin Emmrich and Andreas Siljestrom of Sweden.

Vinod best

Calcutta: Vinod Kumar Sewa clinched the men’s singles title beating top seed Manoj Kumar Sewa 7-5,6-2 at the Cossipore Club - BTA Ranking Men's & Veterans' Tennis Tournament. Vinod picked up a double crown as he had won the men's doubles with Manoj Friday.

Ghosal out

New Delhi: Saurav Ghosal lost 6-11, 11-2, 11-5, 12-14, 5-11 to English Adrian Grant in the quarter finals of the Santiago Open Squash tournament at Santiago De Compostela in Spain. Meanwhile, Dipika Pallikal defeated qualifier Victoria Bell of England 11-5, 12-10, 11-6 in 40 minutes in the pre-quarters of the women’s $8,000 WISPA World Tour event.

Hockey meet

New Delhi: Hockey India (HI) will organise a four-nation tournament here at the National Stadium, from January 17-21.

Vishal title

Mumbai: Vishal Singh clinched his maiden professional title after carding a one-under 52 in the final round of the PGTI Players golf Championship Saturday. Vishal finished with a total of 10-under 149.

Phelps fifth

Berlin: Michael Phelps finished fifth in the 200-metre butterfly final at a short-course World Cup meet. Phelps finished in 1 minute, 52.26 seconds in the final. Meanwhile, Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa has broken his own 50m breaststroke short-course world record clocking 25.25 seconds.
