FALL FASHION

Anaita Shroff Adajania, fashion director of Vogue India and stylist to the stars

Exaggerated shoulder

The 1980s are over. Or so we thought! But one look at some of the strong shoulders that are doing the rounds and you are transported directly to the Dynasty era! “For me it is all about the shoulder this season. On a jacket or on a dress, the shoulder has to have emphasis,” says Anaita. They need not always be sculpted to draw attention: a lifted pattern or a jewelled look works just as well. According to Anaita, even the so-now draped dresses can have exaggerated shoulder appeal.

Wear it: If you are slim, slender or even pear-shaped.

Wear it not: If you already have broad shoulders.

The blazer

This winter, forget the cardigan, forget the sweater and definitely forget the shawl! If there’s one piece to buy, it is the blazer. The blazer fits well with the overall 1980s scheme and it is just so chic. “I think a black blazer worn with a white churidar-kurta and men’s shoes is the epitome of style. It works equally well with a skimpy, short dress or tees and jeans,” says Anamika. There is something for everyone in the world of blazers. Check out the boyfriend blazer, the trophy jacket, the classic Chanel tweed and don’t forget to raid your mom’s cupboard!

Wear it: In any style you want if you have a narrow structure.

Wear it not: Bigger frames beware of the boxy effect.

Maxi dress

The silhouette that has traditionally been reserved for older people or those who have a less than perfect body is now enjoying mainstream status. With designers all over the world promoting the maxi, the trend is slowly and steadily catching on. In the journey back to fashion basics, the maxi is destined to emerge as one of the strongest, most versatile pieces.

“You can dress it up or dress it down. Belt it for a very different look,” says Kallol. Next, you have to decide on the look you want to project. It could be Ranna Gill’s dressed-up maxis or Kallol’s grungy ones —whatever it is, pick one that suits your style.

Wear it: If you are fed up with the off-shoulder party dress.

Wear it not: If you have super broad shoulders or large upper arms. You run the risk of looking disproportionate.

Super skinny jeans

Choosing a pair of pants has never been tougher. Draped, slouchy, tailored, wide-leg, low-waist, high-waist, salwar, dhoti, bootleg, regular, straight and skinny… The world of pants has blown up to include all shapes and sizes.

Shalini, retail pro and seasoned fashionista, says her one pick this fall has to be the super skinny style of jeans. “The ultra-skinny jeans are very hot. Wear them with a longer, looser top to balance the proportions and all you need is a pair of high-heeled ankle boots and you are set,” smiles Shalini.

Wear it: If you are young and thin with any tank or vest.

Wear it not: With any tank or vest if you have a less than perfect frame. Choose more forgiving tops instead.

Anything electric blue

Blue is the new black. Blue is the new canary. Blue is the new blue. Introduce more than a dash of electric blue in your fall-winter wardrobe for an easy touch of trendy.

Wear it: As a bag, boots, blouse or bottom!

Wear it not: Does not apply!
