Parishad strike today

Siliguri, Nov. 10: The Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad has called a 24-hour strike in the Dooars and the Terai tomorrow, to protest the arrest of nine of its supporters at Hasimara after a clash with Gorkha Janmukti Morcha members yesterday.

John Barla, the president of the Dooars-Terai Coordination Committee of the Parishad, who announced the strike, demanded the unconditional release of their supporters.


Minister visit

Siliguri: Union minister of state for railways E. Ahmed held a review meeting with senior officials of the Northeast Frontier Railway at its Maligaon headquarters on Tuesday. The minister, on a day-long visit to Guwahati, also discussed the progress of ongoing projects of the NFR. Ahmed inspected the staff welfare and amenity measures, including the model staff colony being constructed at Pandu, an NFR release said.


Varsity cricket

Siliguri: The sports board of North Bengal University, in association with the Cricket Association of Bengal, will organise the Ajay Ghosh memorial inter-university limited over cricket tournament on the varsity campus and at Kanchenjungha Stadium from November 12. Eight teams will participate in the tournament, the final of which will be played on November 22.


Graveyards

Siliguri: The Darjeeling district minority Congress committee submitted a memorandum to mayor Gangotri Dutta on Tuesday to restore the graveyards in the Siliguri Municipal Corporation area with proper maintenance. They also demanded reservation in jobs in the civic body.


BSF talks

Islampur: BSF officials of Kishanganj sector has sought cooperation of villagers living in Maragati on the Indo-Bangladesh border on Tuesday to reduce trans-border crime. The border guards interacted with the villagers for an effective border management.
