Best of Carnatic music
A familiar name in the city’s classical music circuit, Rasikhapriya has consistently given Calcuttans the opportunity to experience some of the best of Carnatic classical music. In celebration of its 17th anniversary, it hosts a five-day festival that promises to provide pure listening pleasure to lovers of this genre of music. Himself a great connoisseur of Carnatic music, the man who single-handedly takes forward this admirable endeavour is S. Kannan. The festival features performances by exponents in their respective streams and is open to all. To be inaugurated today at 6.10 pm by Pradip Kumar Mitra, station director, All India Radio, Calcutta, it will commence with an invocation by Calcutta K. Srividya. The inaugural evening’s performance will feature a vocal recital (at 6.40 pm) by the Malladi Brothers (Sreerama Prasad and Ravikumar; picture here). Hailing from a family of musicians, the brothers inherit their music from their grandfather, who was also a famous Harikatha exponent of his time in Andhra Pradesh.
