Officer suicide

Shimla, Nov. 8 (PTI): A senior IPS officer allegedly committed suicide on Sunday with his son alleging that “harassment” by some of his colleagues led him to take the extreme step.

Jagjeet Kumar, 57, shot himself with his service revolver. Police said Kumar had killed himself over problems with his son, who had earlier been arrested in a car theft case.

Pension axe

Mainpuri (PTI): Authorities in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district have cancelled the pension of 399 people after an inquiry revealed they were either ineligible or dead. The pensions of 518 people have been cancelled so far in the district after the inquiry, ordered by chief minister Mayavati.

Tiger cubs

Lakhimpur (PTI): At least 15 tiger cubs have been spotted in Uttar Pradesh’s Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, officials said. “All the cubs were hale and hearty, which indicated a sustained growth of the tiger family in Dudhwa,” Shailesh Prasad, field director of the Dudhwa reserve, said.

Jawan killed

Hoshangabad (PTI): A CISF jawan was stabbed to death in an attack by three people in Madhya Pradesh’s Hoshangabad district on Sunday. M.G. Khandare had an argument with the trio while going to the market to buy vegetables. The accused are at large.

Postal scam

Jaipur (PTI) Two sub-postmasters in Rajasthan’s Alwar district have allegedly made Rs 17 lakh by stealing money from villagers’ monthly income schemes and fixed deposit accounts and by opening fake savings accounts in the name of the customers. A search is on for the duo.

Bookies held

Mumbai (PTI): Four bookies were arrested for allegedly running a betting racket during Sunday’s India-Australia cricket match. Two TV sets, 63 mobiles, three laptops, two notebooks and Rs 1,300 in cash were seized from the flat from which they were arrested.
