Women cagers capture silver

Hanoi: Women cagers won silver while seven more bronze medals were added to the kitty as India continued their good run in the third Indoor Asian Games here Thursday.

In basketball, the women’s team came out with an impressive show to claim silver medal in the 3-on-3 event. In all, the Indian eves won three matches and lost one to finish second.

Meanwhile, India were assured of a medal in men’s kabaddi after they beat Bangladesh 59-18 in the semi-final. The Indian quartet of Virdhawal Khade, Rehan Poncha, Arjun Jaitely and Arun D’Souza won the bronze in the 4x100m freestyle team event clocking 3:18:59 secs.

For India, Aamir Khan won the bronze medal in the boy’s section, as did Manoj Kumar (below 51kg low-kick), Limba Meitei (below 67kg), Pankaj Mahato (below 63kg).

In chess too, India won the bronze medal in both individual and team events. K. Sasikiran won the bronze in the mens’ single rapid chess, while Deepan Chakraborty and Jeyakum won it in team mixed blitz chess event. India so far has won three gold, six silver and 18 bronze medals.

Meanwhile, cueist Manan Chandra’s medal hopes went up in smoke after he lost his third place play off match against UAE’s Mohamed Al-Hashmi in the 15-Red Snooker discipline here. (PTI)
