Hyderabad: A woman boxer has committed suicide, due, allegedly, to harassment by a coach, the police said Wednesday.
S. Amaravati (19), a trainee at the Centre of Excellence, was found dead in her room in the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) hostel Wednesday morning. She had consumed sleeping pills. No suicide note has been found and an investigation was on, police said.
Amaravati had been staying in the hostel, inside the Lal Bahadur Shastri stadium, for the last couple of years. Family members alleged that a coach, Omkar Yadav, insulted and harassed the boxer for her poor performance in a recent match.
The coach insulted her by saying shed better end her life as her performance was far from satisfactory. He also told her that she should get out of the hostel and get married, the family members said.
The state sports minister, K. Venkata Reddy, has ordered an inquiry into the matter. A departmental inquiry would be conducted in addition to the police inquiry. We will take serious action if anyone is found guilty, he told reporters. The minister also promised financial assistance to the boxers family.
Meanwhile, Yadav denied that he had insulted and harassed Amaravati. (PTI)
