Lee, Paine on the mend

Calcutta: Cricket Australia (CA) Wednesday issued an injury update on Brett Lee and Tim Paine, who were both forced to return home from Australia’s tour of India. In the release the Board said that neither Lee nor Paine faces a long absence, the verdict offered after both players consulted specialists back home.

With a view to the team’s upcoming engagements — against the West Indies and Pakistan at home — the Board physiotherapist, Alex Kountouris had further good news for the Ricky Pontings with an announcement that Michael Clarke was making good progress in his recovery.

Here’s what Kountouris had to say about each player (alphabetically)

Michael Clarke: Is making good progress and it’s hoped he’ll play for New South Wales before the first Test against the West Indies.

Brett Lee: Has seen a specialist and CA medical staff in Melbourne. He had a scan that confirmed the cause of the pain as being a long-standing bone spur near the elbow joint. It is felt there is no major problem with the joint and we are optimistic that he may be able to resume bowling fairly soon, possibly some time next week.

Tim Paine: Saw a hand specialist in Melbourne Wednesday and doesn’t require surgery to the fractured ring finger of his left hand. He will recommence cricket training in approximately three weeks’ time.
