MODERN DESIGNS FOR MODERN GENIE

Narendra Kumar speaks to t2 about Amitabh Bachchan’s look in Aladin…

How did your association with Aladin come about?

The director Mr (Sujoy) Ghosh wanted me to give Mr Bachchan the look of a modern-day genie, Riteish (Deshmukh) that of a schoolboy, while Sanjay Dutt was to be a magician with capes.

What is Amitabh Bachchan’s look in the film?

Though the film Aladin has fantastical features, the look is more contemporary, a new-age version. The clothes are also styled accordingly, mainly embroidered jackets and hats. All designed and made in-house by our karigars. Jackets are in maroons and wines and a little costume-y.

We used different techniques of applique, hand and machine embroidery.

Isn’t Narendra Kumar’s sense of style very different from the way a genie would dress?

When you are doing a film, the look of the film is more important. But there is Narendra Kumar in the styles as all the jackets are well-cut, smartly tailored and not overly embellished.

So how was it to style Big B?

This was the first time I dressed him. It was a pleasure to dress Mr Bachchan as he is very accommodating for a man of his stature. He took my advice and opinion pretty seriously.

Any film projects in the offing?

I am working on Vivek Oberoi’s wardrobe for Prince. It’s a sort of high-end gangster look. It’s a Tips film and is more urban-centric than the sort of old-world yet contemporary Aladin.
