Mishap kills one, injures 2

Alipurduar, Nov. 3: One woman died and her husband and daughter were injured when the bicycle they were riding was knocked down by a pick-up van at Ranthenga, about 35km from here, last night.

Narayan Barman, 32, his wife Dakshina and the 7-year-old daughter Puja were returning home around 11pm. Suddenly, a pick up van coming from the opposite direction collided with the two-wheeler on the Mathabanga-Falakata road. All the three fell on the road and the 24-year-old Dakshina died on spot. The other two suffered serious injuries and they were admitted to a nursing home in Siliguri. Police could not seize the van.


NBU trek

Siliguri: A 26-member team set out on a high altitude trekking from the North Bengal University on Tuesday. The expedition, organised in association with Siliguri-based Himalayan Nature and Adventure Foundation to promote adventure sports, was flagged off by the vice-chancellor, Arunava Basu Majumdar.


Classes hit

Siliguri: Classes were disrupted at Siliguri Institute of Technology on Tuesday as students organised a day-long demonstration at the institution’s gate, demanding adequate security on the campus and accommodation in hostel for more students.


Couple arrest

Balurghat: Abhishek Sarkar and his wife Chaitali, arrested by Balurghat police on Monday for torturing the 10-year-old domestic help, was remanded in jail custody for three days by the court of additional chief judicial magistrate here on Tuesday.


Plot clash

Islampur: Three persons were hurt at Haptiagach near Chopra after two groups of villagers clashed over the possession of a plot of land on Tuesday. Chopra police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
