Manipur thrash Arunachal

Kohima, Nov. 3: Manipur drubbed Arunachal Pradesh 10-0 in the inaugural match of the North East Talimeren Ao Trophy football tournament at the Dimapur District Sports Association Stadium in Dimapur today.

The Manipur players dominated the match throughout regulation time to humiliate their Arunachal counterparts.

Arunachal Pradesh will now take on Mizoram while Manipur will face Tripura on November 5.

In the second match today, Mizoram went down to Tripura by 1-2 goals in a thrilling match. In the second half, the Mizoram men dominated proceedings but failed to equalise.

Sikkim will take on Assam at noon tomorrow while in the second match, hosts Nagaland will take on Meghalaya at 2pm.

DoNER minister B.K. Handique formally inaugurated the tournament last evening.

The tournament, played under the theme “Together We Can Soar”, is being jointly sponsored by the DoNER ministry and the Nagaland government.

The champions will be awarded Rs 7 lakh along with the running trophy, medals and certificates while the runners-up will receive Rs 4 lakh.

The third-placed team will receive Rs 2 lakh while fourth-placed team will bag Rs 1 lakh.

The fair play award winners will receive Rs 50,000, the “player of the tournament” Rs 25,000, highest scorer Rs 10,000, best goalkeeper Rs 10,000 while the champions’ team coach will be awarded Rs 10,000.

The teams who lose in the league stage will receive Rs 50,000 each along with certificates.
