Held for branding ‘witch’

Islampur, Oct. 23: Naren Tudu of Sidpara village near Chopra, 30km from here, was arrested today for his attempt to brand a woman “witch”.

Police said two months back, two children of the village had died. Since then, Tudu had been blaming Rani Murmu for the deaths. Rani had filed a complaint on Thursday following which Murmu was arrested. The accused was produced in the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate here today. He has been remanded in jail custody for 14 days.


Demonstration

Balurghat: Members of Sara Bangla Prabahaman Siksha Karmi Samiti organised a demonstration in front of the district magistrate’s office on Friday to protest against the non-payment of their allowances. The members alleged that they had not been getting it for the past 43 months. They also submitted a memorandum to the district magistrate.


Road blocked

Jaigaon: Residents of Lataguri blocked the Mainaguri-Chulsa Road for more than three hours on Friday, demanding the arrest of those who attempted to create trouble during a cultural programme in the area on Thursday. The blockade was withdrawn at 3pm after officials of Malbazar police station intervened.


Cane day

Siliguri: The Amway Opportunity Foundation observed the International White Cane Day at Bhimbhar Snehaashram, 40 km from here, on Friday. White canes were distributed among the visually impaired boarders of the ashram.


Memorandum

Siliguri: Members of the Siliguri Taxation Bar Association met state finance minister Asim Dasgupta at Bagdogra on Thursday and submitted a memorandum to highlight issues like delay in receiving user ID and password for e-filling of tax returns and discontinuation of zonal sales tax advisory committee meetings.
