Minors raped in Dooars

Alipurduar, Oct. 6: Two children, one a nine-year-old visually challenged and the other a resident of a tea garden, have been raped allegedly by their neighbours yesterday.

The visually challenged girl is a Class II student and had come home from the school hostel for the puja vacation.

The girl was alone at home in Purba Birpara, near here, when Gobindo Barman, her neighbour, entered the house, took her forcibly to the kitchen and allegedly raped her. The girl’s father returned around 2.30pm to find her shivering in the kitchen. Both the parents had gone to work and the elder sister had been out for tuition.

“Usually she comes running when we return. But yesterday, she did not and we found her hiding in the kitchen. When we pressed her to tell us what happened, she broke down and told us about Barman,” the father, a rickshaw-puller, said. When the parents charged Barman, he denied it and later fled the village.

Police took the girl to the subdivisional hospital for examination after an FIR was filed at 11pm yesterday. The girl was produced before the judicial magistrate today.

Pradeep Chakroborty, the inspector in-charge of Alipurduar police station, said: “The accused is absconding.”

In Gangutia Tea Estate, 34km from here, a 13-year-old girl was raped allegedly by Samir Kheria of the same garden. Local people beat up Samir and handed him over to Kalchini police. The accused was produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate of Alipurduar, who rejected the bail plea and remanded Samir in jail custody for 14 days. The girl was sent to Latabari Health Centre.
