New SP strategy to tackle Maoists

Giridih, Oct. 5: Union home minister P. Chidambaram believes that the Maoist menace can be tackled by police crackdown, but the new Giridih superintendent of police thinks otherwise.

IPS Ravikant Dhaan, who took charge as the 30th superintendent of police of Giridih today, feels that detaching people from the rebel outfits, which can be done by providing them instant justice against police atrocities, is the only solution.

“We are in a battle with Naxalites and it can be won only with the help of strategies. The rule is don’t let people go to the Maoist court and get their grievances addressed. And I would like to follow that same principle while dealing with the Naxalites here,” said Dhaan, when asked how he would tackle the Maoist problem. He was speaking at a news meet.

“The people’s court (jan adalat) hold by Maoists is the place where instant justice is delivered. This justice system is hugely popular among the villagers and they become Maoist sympathisers,” the SP pointed out.

“I have come to know from my predecessors that the Maoists here operate with a different strategy. So, we have to always remain on toes and prevent them from spreading their wings,” said Dhaan, who has earlier served in Latehar and Palamau — both Naxalite strongholds.

On the rise of the crime graph, he said: “Robbers and murderers get away because of their nexus with influential people. My job will be to ensure that no such nexus flourishes here.”

Right from the constable to higher police officers — I will keep an eye on everyone,” he added.
