‘Sweet’ protest for power

Balurghat, Sept. 15: Congress members today garlanded officials of the power department here and forced them to have sweets to protest against frequent power cuts in the area.

President of the district Youth Congress Gopal Deb led a delegation of nearly 100 party supporters to the office of the divisional manager of the West Bengal Electricity Distribution Company Limited on Prachya Bharati Road.

Divisional manager Abhijit Chanda was not in office at that time. The protesters barged into the room of administrative officer Rahul Chatterjee and gheraoed him for one-and-a-half-hours from 12 noon. They also garlanded him and forced him to eat sweets.


Ozone Day

Siliguri: World Ozone Day will be observed at the North Bengal Science Centre on Wednesday. Popular science lecture, quiz and film show will be part of the programme.


Suicide

Islampur: Kadu Debnath, 54, a resident of Futibari in Chopra, committed suicide at his residence on Monday by hanging. Police said Death was suffering from depression.


Run over

Islampur: Mukesh Mahato, a 19-year-old resident of Dhantala in Islampur, was run over by a truck on NH31 on Monday. Police said the youth was heading towards Kishanganj on a motorcycle. The truck driver has fled.


Health unit

Islampur: Deepa Das Munshi, the Congress MP of Raiganj, inaugurated a 10-bed health centre at Kanki, on Tuesday. Das Munshi had given Rs 2 lakh for the centre when she was the MLA of Goalpokhor.


Camp recce

Guwahati: Assam principal secretary (home) Subhas Das will visit the Kakopathar designated camp of the Ulfa pro-talks group in Tinsukia on Wednesday to hold talks with its leaders.
