Jamshedpur, Sept. 2: Now spotting tuskers will become easy in the 192sqkm Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary.
The watchtower which was installed by the forest authorities adjacent to the Shiva temple atop a hill to facilitate panoramic view of the jungle, will be opened for visitors on Saturday.
The 30-feet high tower, took about a year to be erected at a cost of Rs 1.3 lakh.
Sources in the sanctuary said that the watchtower atop the hill was initially put up for monitoring forest fire, which is a common phenomenon during summer, but later it was decided that it would be open for the visitors. It was believed that the watchtower would attract more footfall to Dalma.
Five pairs of binoculars have also been procured for closer look at the forest.
Sushil Oraon, the ranger of Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, said: “Every year, many students of zoology turn up at the forest for sight-seeing and nature study. The watchtower will help the students in their study while other visitors can enjoy the sight of wild animals.”
He added that as many as 15 persons can be accommodated together on the watchtower.
The scenic beauty of Dalma attracts many tourists from neighbouring states of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa round the year but the highlight is the elephants. Some tourist also come here for trekking and adventure sports, Oraon said.
However from this year, officials of the sanctuary has decided that visitors with two-wheelers will not be allowed to travel atop the hills during the rainy season. “Riding through the hilly road during monsoon is risky so we have decided not to allow two-wheelers,” said an official.
