Truck mows down boy
Malda, Aug. 30: An eight-year-old boy was run over by a truck at Rukundipur on the Ratua-Bhaluka state highway around 11am today.
Suman Mondal was standing by the side of the road when he was knocked down by the truck laden with puffed rice. According to witnesses, the truck was trying to overtake another vehicle when the accident occurred. The boy died on the spot and the killer vehicle sped away.
Following the incident, the angry residents of Rukundipur blocked the road and a team of doctors of Red Cross was held up in the traffic jam for more than one hour. Dr D. Sarkar, the Malda district secretary of the Red Cross, said they could resume the journey only after police interference.
Bus overturns
Islampur: Twenty passengers were injured when a Raiganj-bound private bus turned turtle on NH31 at Sujapur near Chakulia on Sunday. Chakulia police said the accident occurred after the driver had lost control of the bus. The injured people were admitted to Kisanganj MGM Hospital.
Arrest plea
Jaigaon: Members of the RSP submitted a memorandum to Jaigaon police on Sunday, demanding the immediate arrest of the people who had fired at the vehicle in which the partys local committee leader N.P. Yadav had been travelling on August 24. They said Yadav had been returning from Jaigaon to Hasimara. The RSP has threatened an agitation if the police fail to arrest the accused in five days.
Water scarcity
Jaigaon: About 15,000 residents of Madarihat block have been without running water ever since a pump of the public health engineering department went haywire a week ago. Madhusudan Chakraborty, the in-charge of the department at Madarihat, said the pump had been sent to Cooch Behar for repair and it would be installed soon.
Suicide
Islampur: Ramzan Ali, 18, committed suicide by consuming poison at his residence in Patagar near Islampur on Saturday.
