11 legislators join Arunachal Cong

Itanagar: With the Assembly elections in October, the ruling Congress in Arunachal Pradesh received a shot in the arm with 11 non-Congress MLAs joining its fold.With their inclusion, the strength of the Congress shot up from 43 to 54 in the 60-member Assembly. Speaker Setong Sena accepted their resignation on Saturday.The general secretary of Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee, T.C. Tok, on Sunday confirmed that the 11 MLAs have joined the Congress to ensure its “landslide victory” in the upcoming Assembly polls.

Arrested

Kokrajhar: Three NDFB cadres were arrested by police from the Serfanguri area in Kokrajhar on charges of extortion on Saturday evening. The trio were identified as Penla Basumatary, Urga Basumatary, and Gobinda Rabha, all in their twenties.

Timber seized

Dibrugarh: The forest department on Sunday seized illegal timber from the banks of the Brahmaputra at Rohmoria in Dibrugarh district. Forest department personnel said the timber seized would be worth Rs 2 lakh. No person has been arrested in this connection.

Looted

Guwahati: Thieves stole cash and jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh from the residence of Bineet Chaliha on Saturday. Police are yet to make any breakthrough and no arrest was made till Sunday.

Imposter held

Guwahati: Police arrested Hemanta Kumar Sarma from Sonapur on Saturday on charges of collecting taxes from industries by impersonating as a tax collector of Dimoria anchalik panchayat. He was remanded in judicial custody on Sunday.
