3 more positive for flu
Siddharth Gupta, Sudipto Chakraborty and Isha Sharma Sarkar tested positive for the H1N1 virus on Friday evening, taking the number of swine flu cases in the city to 67. Diamond Harbour resident Balasubramanium Govindrajan, 53, who was admitted to Beleghata Infectious Diseases Hospital after he touched down at the Dum Dum airport from Singapore on Tuesday, has tested negative for the virus. A team from the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases inspected the laboratory at Desun Hospital on Friday to assess its preparedness for conducting swab tests for swine flu. The team will shortly submit its report to the health department.
Phase out
A delegation of taxi operators requested the new transport minister, Ranjit Kundu, on Friday to expedite the replacement of old taxis. The operators also requested Kundu to allow them to use Maruti Omni and Tata Indica as taxi since Hindustan Motors is unable to provide adequate Ambassadors right away.
Murder arrest
Sanjay Karmakar alias Dhaka Swapan, a Taltala resident, was arrested in Bankura on Friday in connection with the murder of Swapna Chakraborty, whose body was found in a trunk on the bank of a canal in Narkeldanga in June. Swapna was a resident of Baisakhi Abasan in Salt Lake. Karmakar had allegedly helped Swapna’s husband to murder her.
Girls found
Two students of Atul Krishna Roy Bidyatan in Sonarpur, one 12 years old and the other 11, were found in front of Priya cinema on Friday evening after they went missing from their school in the morning. The guardians of the girls had lodged complaints with police.
Fatal mishap
Mithun Nayak, 19, died on Thursday night after his motorcycle hit a divider on VIP Road, near Teghoria. The youth, an electrician from South 24-Parganas, was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead.
BSNL cable
Three men in their late-20s, K. Pal, Subha Dhar and Mithun, were arrested on Friday for allegedly damaging underground BSNL cables on SP Mukherjee Road. A BSNL official said customers in the area were facing connection problems because underground cables were being damaged. Police claimed the three said they were employed by a private service provider.
Special train
Eastern Railway will run a special train from Howrah to Danapur on August 23. The train will leave Howrah at 11.45pm and reach Danapur at 10.30am the next day.
