Jailed Rai has pain in backbone

Ranchi, Aug. 18: Former urban development minister Harinarayan Rai, who is now cooling his heels at Birsa Munda Central Jail, has complained of an unbearable pain in backbone within 12 hours of him being shifted to prison in the disproportionate assets case.

His former cabinet colleague Anosh Ekka, who is also lodged in the same jail, also reportedly informed the authorities that he has some medical complications.

This caused a team of doctors to rush to the office of the civil surgeon — their controlling authority — to requisition two specialised doctors who will check Rai tomorrow. This despite the fact that the jail doctors “found everything okay” as far as Rai’s health was concerned. But the authorities are bound to provide best medical care to Rai and Ekka in view of the vigilance court order.

Jail superintendent Deepak Vidyarthi said he has accepted a petition from Rai that he was unwell. “We have referred the matter to the civil surgeon,” he said.
