Students hurt in clash

Islampur, Aug. 17: Five students of Islampur College were injured after supporters of the SFI and the Chhatra Parishad clashed on the campus today over a case of alleged eve teasing.

The SFI supporters said they were beaten up as they had protested when Chhatra Parishad members passed lewd comments on a girl of BA first year. The Chhatra Parishad denied the charges. Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control. No one has been arrested so far.


Science meet

Siliguri: North Bengal Science Centre celebrated its 12th anniversary on Monday. B.N. Chakraborty, the dean of science at North bengal University, was present on the occasion. As a part of the celebrations, programmes like sit-and -draw competitions, magic show, quiz and science dramas were held.


4 injured

Islampur: Four persons were injured after two groups of villagers fought over the possession of a plot of land at Dolapara on Monday. Police said the injured have been admitted to Islampur Sub-divisional Hospital. No one has been arrested.


Timber haul

Jaigaon: Foresters of Madarihat range seized timber worth Rs 40,000 from a Maruti van at Gobinhat under Falakata block on Monday. Sunil Roy, the driver, has been arrested.


Tata meeting

Siliguri: The deputy labour commissioner of Jalpaiguri has called a tripartite meeting to break the deadlock of Nowera Nuddy Tea Estate, one of the four gardens of Tata Tea in the Dooars, on August 19. The management had declared a lockout in the garden on August 11, following the assault and confinement of the garden medical officer.
