Cannabis found in tanker

Siliguri, July 28: The directorate of revenue intelligence seized cannabis worth about Rs 50 lakh from Fulbari, 7km from here, yesterday evening.

The contraband was kept in an empty oil tanker. “We recovered 62 packets of cannabis weighing 21kg each from the tanker. The contraband was from Manipur and it is known as ‘Manipuri ganja’. Its price varies between Rs 3,000 and Rs 5,000 a kg,” said an officer of the department.


Nature Day

Siliguri: World Nature Conservation Day was observed at North Bengal Science Centre on Tuesday. Students from different schools participated in quiz and cross word puzzle competitions at the centre.


Road blocked

Siliguri: Members of All Bengal Primary Para Teachers’ Association organised a blockade at Hashmi Chowk here on Tuesday, demanding that they be given priority when the government conducted recruitment drives.


Theft charge

Balurghat: Balurghat police arrested Bikram Hasda, a Trinamul Congress member of Nadirpur gram panchayat, on Monday on the basis of a complaint by his relatives that he had been involved in a theft a few months ago.


Suicide

Islampur: Anita Das, 23, a resident of Titidanga, committed suicide by consuming poison on Monday. The body has been sent for post-mortem.


‘Dowry’ fire

Malda: A housewife allegedly set herself on fire at her husband’s house in Solpur village near Malda on Tuesday. Police said the 26-year-old Serina Bibi had been married to Masidur Rehman, a teacher in a local primary school, about four years back. The couple were childless. The deceased’s father said Rehman and his parents had been torturing her for the past two years for more dowry.
