Turtles seized, 2 arrested
Siliguri, July 12: Officials of Baikunthapur forest division’s mobile patrol II, recovered 46 turtles from Fulbari, located 7km from here, today.
Two persons, Md Rezzak, a resident of Bidhannagar, and Ansarul Haque from Muruligach, were arrested in this connection. Manindra Biswas, the conservator of forest, said it is suspected that the turtles were being smuggled to China where they will be used to manufacture medicines. An investigation is on.
Robbers held
Jalpaiguri: Mainaguri police arrested four persons from Sitabari on Saturday when they assembled to plan a robbery. The arrested persons, Swapan Roy, Sujit Bhowmik, Ratan Daimari and Chandan Mondal, are all residents of Mainaguri. The police have also recovered three firearms and 17 rounds of bullets.
SSB injured
Islampur: Two jawans of the 21st Battalion of SSB posted at Kishanganj were injured when the border force clashed with smugglers at Dighalbank in Thakurganj district of Bihar on Saturday. A resident of the village was also injured. The injured were admitted to Kishanganj MG Medical College and Hospital.
Newborn body
Islampur: The body of a newborn girl was recovered from Chakulia on Sunday morning. Police said the body was found inside a jute bag near NH31.
Four hurt
Islampur: Four persons were injured after two groups of villagers clashed in a drunken state on Saturday evening at Tungidighi. Police said the injured were admitted to Karandighi Rural Hospital. Nobody has been arrested.
Shop looted
Balurghat: A mobile phone shop was looted in Patiram on Saturday evening. Police said 90 mobile sets were stolen from the shop. No one has been arrested.
