Guwahati, July 4: Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi today wound up the budget discussion in the Assembly asserting that the economy was on the right track despite the global recession and that special emphasis had been given for the development of backward areas in the state.
Gogoi said the government would meet the difficult situation caused by the recession and other factors through its emergency savings.
“The savings with the Reserve Bank of India were invested in the form of government of India treasury bills,” the chief minister said.
“Against this saving, the government secured Rs 231.38 crore as interest. Despite the recession, the state still hopes to maintain an eight per cent economic growth,” he said.
Gogoi said emphasis had been given to develop the backward and border areas. A special fund was created for the purpose, he added.
Taking a dig at the leader of the Opposition, Chandra Mohan Patowary, Gogoi said while criticising the budget, Patowary had left out the portions where the CAG report complimented the state government.
