Blockade after bus kills boy

Malda, July 3: A seven-year-old boy was run over by a bus at Aiho, 20km from here, today, prompting the local people to block a state highway for four hours.

Samir Mondal, a Class II student of Aiho Bakshinagar Primary School, was returning home from the institution when the bus on way to Malda town from Habibpur hit him from behind.

Hundreds of local people set up the blockade at 10am, demanding compensation for the family. They damaged the vehicle. The driver was arrested and booked for reckless driving.

Malda: A primary health centre at Gopalganj in Kaliachak was ransacked on Friday after a woman delivered a baby outside the facility after finding it closed. Angry villagers gheraoed the block medical officer of adjoining Bedarabad health centre A.K. Chowdhury, who visited the spot. They demanded to know why the centre was closed the previous night.


Drug arrest

Islampur: Three persons were arrested by the SSB from Thakurganj on the Indo-Nepal border on Friday for possessing two pounds of brown sugar worth around Rs 1 crore. Bipin Yadav of Thakurganj, Atul Burman and Pradhan Biswas of Salugara were handed over to police.


College strike

Islampur: The SFI has called a strike in Islampur College on Saturday, to demand repair of the hostel and re-affiliation of the institution to North Bengal University instead of Gaurbanga University.
