Job ad on campus triggers worries

Jamshedpur, July 3: An anonymous advertisement promising lucrative jobs to “girls only” sent the Jamshedpur Women’s College management into a tizzy today.

The worried authorities submitted a written complaint to the police, alleging that the advertisement might be an attempt to lure college girls into the flesh trade. The college is also mulling a cellphone ban on premises and counselling sessions for new students.

Principal Shukla Mohanty said copies of the job ad were pasted on the walls outside the college this morning. “The issue needs to be properly investigated, as neither the advertising company nor any individual has given his name or address for future correspondence,” added Mohanty.

The ad — a copy of which is available with The Telegraph — promised an income of Rs 3,000-12,000 per month to girls who are looking for financial security. “Interestingly, the advertisement has not mentioned any qualifications required. The company was only looking for a few specific ‘qualities’ in its future employees, raising suspicion,” said one of the students, who first saw the advertisement.

Qualities asked for included “friendly with a long list of people, energetic and humourous, flair to interact with people, party animal”.

“The ad mentioned two contact numbers. A few girls called the numbers, but the person on the other side refused to furnish his address. However, he promised to call back later,” said Mohanty.

The Bistupur police said they were probing the complaint, claiming that the phone numbers would prove an important link for arresting the culprits.

Meanwhile, the college has decided to spread awareness among its students through counselling.

“We will advise the girls to keep away from any anonymous and suspicious job advertisement. The college will also take steps to strictly implement a ban on cellphone,” added Mohanty.
