Violence rocks Ranchi College

Ranchi, July 2: Unrest gripped Ranchi College today when some students — all boarders of the adjoining hostel — demanding removal of a professor from administrative work turned violent and started pelting stones. The professor, A.K. Govil, received head injuries.

The students have been locked in a standoff with Govil over admission into Intermediate courses. They want the college to admit students, who could not meet the set cut-off marks. But Govil, who is in charge of admissions, refused to give in.

In protest, the students today gathered at the college gate and started a demonstration. They demanded immediate removal of Govil from the admissions in-charge post, saying that he used foul language. As the teachers came out to check what was the fuss about, some boys started pelting stones targeting Govil. They also smashed the windscreens of a passing car.

“I have always admitted students on the basis of merit and as per the guidelines of the university,” Govil said. However, Ritesh Kumar Singh, a student, alleged: “Govil uses abusive language. He had even threatened to send one of the students to jail.”

Meanwhile, principal Anand Bhusan assured the students that the professor would not be involved in any administrative work. President of Ranchi College Hostel Arvind Singh said that in case the college failed to take any action, they would resort to a greater agitation.
