Tata union polls kick off

Jamshedpur, June 25: The district administration today initiated steps for a smooth Tata Workers’ Union (TWU) election as directed by the labour commissioner-cum-registrar earlier this month.

Additional deputy commissioner of East Singhbhum H.N. Ram directed the six-member election sub-committee to review the constitution that was carved out during the last election.

Pointing out that the constituencies for election (departments inside the works and offices are divided into constituencies) was a major controversy in the last election process, Ram said: “The election sub-committee will first review the earlier constituencies and submit its report to me. Based on the report we will decide on the next course of action.”

Ram, who has been appointed as returning officer for the election, said that an election committee meeting has been called on June 27. He clarified that the election would have 214 constituencies. The administration is trying to complete the election process by July 20.

“We only have to ensure that all the constituencies have the proper representation of electorates. Despite earlier differences, all the members of the election committee were unanimous about reviewing the constituencies, carved out of various departments and sections in Tata Steel in the last election,” said Ram.

There are 11,785 workers in Tata Steel eligible to cast votes.

The last election process of the TWU that began on May 5 ran into rough weather due to the controversy between ruling and rival factions over the formation of constituencies.
